My Internet Journey Has Come Full Circle
It is with great serendipity that I came across Bear Blog and Herman’s post at the same time today, where he touts the simplicity of 90s internet.
I have been oddly drawn towards something of this nature for years now, but have not found an outlet until I came across this platform.
Prior to this, I’ve maintained a WordPress website for close to a decade, and while I love the community-based aspect of it, I just couldn’t help but think it was growing more convoluted by the year. Add AI to the mix and we have a very real possibility of the Dead Internet Theory on our hands.
I enjoy blogging for the sake of it, and I enjoy reading how other humans around the world deal with topics I’m interested in (such as fountain pens, journalling, and good ol’ self-improvement), but the internet has devolved so much that I question every website I visit, wondering if I’m reading the words of man or machine.
I don’t get this feeling here, though. It’s transported me back to the olden days of Geocities—and trust me, I was this close to self-hosting a plain text website before I found Bear Blog—where we all return to our innocence and share the seemingly mundane facets of our lives to others.
I’ve written professionally for 15 odd years now, and only now do I feel like I’m back to writing just for the sake of it instead of chasing an impending deadline.
So maybe this is where I rediscover my passion for words. Maybe I can leave the YouTube and Instagram algorithms behind now. Maybe this is where I come full circle.
